Common Reasons Why a Man Gets Impotent

Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction, afflicts about one out of four men today, and this is a cause for alarm, if not immediate action. The first indicator of this prevalent condition is the inability to start or maintain an erection long enough for you to have sex with your partner. But do you understand your body very well, and how your penis becomes erect and ready for sexual encounter?

When you are sexually aroused, nerve impulses sent from your brain direct blood flow into your penile chambers called corpus cavernosum. Impotence occurs once your nerves present next to your genitals are damaged. There are several factors that cause this scenario, or an impotent condition. Here are some of them:

  • Use of certain prescription drugs – Prescribed medications used to treat a health condition could potentially cause erectile dysfunction. Drugs to watch out for include antidepressants, antihistamines, and tranquilizers.
  • Health illnesses and obesity – Chronic diseases that affect your nerves, veins, arteries, heart, and kidney can give you impotence symptoms. Among the common culprits are diabetes, heart disease, and hypogonadism, which is where your testosterone is not sufficiently released. Beware of being overweight or obese, too, as studies show that you are more likely to be impotent than others within the normal weight range if you are overweight. This shows the cycle of disease: obesity can increase your risk for diabetes, hypertension, and stroke, which may affect your erections.
  • Physical pressure – Have you been told that biking pressures your nerves and blood vessels that force more blood into your genitals? Do activities like this moderately to avoid temporary impotence.
  • Stress – Your mind and body should be relaxed for you to be in the right mood and shape for sex. Beware, though, because being fatigued, pressured, depressed, anxious, or stressed out can make it easier for impotence to take place in your body.
  • Substance abuse and bad lifestyle choices – Smoking, alcohol abuse, and use of illegal drugs can cause impotence and contribute to overall health decline. Remember that what you eat and how you choose to live will inevitably affect the quality of your sex life and experience.

If you see the signs and symptoms and perform less-than-optimally in bed, you are probably a candidate for impotence or erectile dysfunction and should start acting now.
