The Effects of Ginger on Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, commonly affects older male individuals, but can also strike even at your peak years because of factors like excess stress and relationship concerns, use of medication, and a range of health conditions. A man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection due to insufficient blood supply to his penis, and not just because of the lack of arousal. If this is the case for you, research shows that you may benefit from herbs such as ginger, although you have to check for a potentially serious disease that underlies your ED.

Ginger has a distinct aroma and flavor. It is said that the same agents that lend it its medicinal properties are also the ones responsible for stimulating sexual desire because of the warm and spicy scent, and the unique taste. In Asian and Arabic cultures, for instance, ginger is considered an aphrodisiac because of its fragrance alone! It is even noted in the Kama Sutra, the ancient Indian Hindu text focusing on the art of sexual pleasure and satisfaction.

But perhaps the main benefit of ginger related to erectile dysfunction is improved circulation. Poor circulation is pointed as the potential cause of erectile dysfunction in men because impaired or damaged blood vessels fail to fill with blood and expand as necessary. Herbs like ginger are said to assist in increasing blood vessel dilation and improving circulation.

Gingerol, shogaol, and zingiberene are the active compounds in ginger. Gingerol compounds are shown to affect bood vessels; a specific Japanese study they are found to stimulate blood vessel contractions in rat tissue samples. It was done through the regulation of signaling molecules referred to as eicosanoids. It is important, however, to not use ginger therapeutically if you are on blood thinning medications, as doing so may increase your risk of bleeding. Ginger may also increase the effects of drugs that lower insulin or glucose.

Have you also heard of ginger moxa? It is a Chinese medicinal therapy for treating erectile dysfunction. It combines the properties of ginger with moxibustion, a method involving the burning of certain herbs at various acupuncture points along the body. Ginger moxa is becoming well-known in Western medicine as well.

Mugwort is the usual herb of choice, with its leaves rolled into a moxa stick like a cigar. In ginger moxa, a thick ginger slice serves as the insulation between the moxa stick and your skin. It is pierced with a few tiny holes in which the sticks are placed and allowed to burn down far enough to encourage sweating and skin redness. This procedure is usually done several times.
